Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1996 Bumped into Peter Gabriel and Annie Ohayon. We talk about music and then the possibility of my taking some portraits of Peter on the giant polaroid camera. Peter asks me to catch a new musician on Thursday at the Mercury Lounge, Joseph Arthur. Says he's really good. I'll try, but Thursday is rather full.
Thursday, Dec. 5, 1996 3:00 PM Moondance Diner to shoot some video of Lou Reed and Paul Auster for the project. Excellent footage.
6:30 PM Life Magazine party at 58th Street for photo exhibit organized by David Friend. Some incredible photographs. Talked to Norman Pearlstine at the party and we agreed on a dinner for next week.
7:15 PM Rushed to Ingrid Sishey's intimate Interview Magazine screening at the Plaza Hotel of the Elton John documentary Tantrums and Tiaras by David Furnish. Jil Sander and Marion Greenberg came over to sit with us. Talked to Jeff Koons, Donald Baechler, Gianni Versace, Elton, and Avedon. Then Elton introduced the film and his friend the director. It's shot entirely on Hi-8 and I found it extraordinary, very personal and terribly funny.
9:15 PM Rushed back downtown to the Mercury Lounge to catch the last few songs of Joseph Arthur. Stood close to the stage. He's great. I should take a portrait of him.
March 7, 1997 Joseph Arthur arrives at 4:00 PM for a portrait wearing a faux leather jacket and carrying a guitar. We have a cup of tea and then take some 8x10 polaroids and a few rolls of 120. Expressive face. We talk about music and apartments. He's very charming and unspoiled by what's happening to him. I promise to see him perform at the Mercury Lounge again on March 19th.
