DAN BERN
Feb. 16, 1997    Got 10 CDs todya including that guy we heard on the radio, Dan Bern. Its very good, especially "Wasteland," "Jerusalem," "Too Late to Die Young," "Never Fall In Love," and "Rome." It's a keeper.

Sept. 26, 1997 10:00 PM    Dan Bern in concert at the Bottom Line. The show opens late with a set by the amazing Toshi Reagon and her band Big Lovely. The Dan Bern, wearling camouflage pants cut ionto shorts and a tee shirt. he sings selections from the CD and some really great new songs. Very good musiian, with a casual but concentrated stage presence.

Sept. 29, 1997 2:00 PM    Dan Bern arrives with a friend names Martha for an interview and some photos. After watching a video that I have been working on we move into the studio to talk about his work. He plays the guitar as we talk. I ask him about all the famous names he uses in his songs... Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Manson, James Dean, Arthur Miller, Henry Miller, Mohammed Ali. Dan says, "All those people, we're fixated on them. Probably in 300 years we will think that Mother Teresa and Princess Diana are the same person. People will look at photos of them and think, this is the shot of her when she was young and this when she was old. Celebrities are now like Greek mythological characters. We use then that way. You think to yourself, are you going to be Henry Miller today or Arthur...and no one wants to be Arthur. Famous names are immediate touchstones. Do I want to spend 15 minutes in a concernt getting us all to one place or do I use a name that does it instantly?" Dan Bern is smart, talented and very cool.
