August 25,1998 TWA flight to Los Angeles arrives at 7:30 P.M.
Very comfortable trip, great foot room and on time. I like TWA more and more. Then jump into a Hertz rental, Gold Service. It's the best.so easy. and your car just waits patiently under your flashing name. Out of the airport in
minutes and off to Tim Burton's 40th birthday party, hosted by the
beautiful, charming and very talented Lisa Marie. And, it's a wonderful
party, well worth the trip. Super-cool atmosphere, great music, but not too
loud. Perfect food, flowing Crystal. The Lloyd Wright designed house (Frank's son) on Franklin looks strangely surreal, delicately bathed in colored
spots. Talk to Danny DeVito (about DVD players), Rod Stiger, artworld legend
Bill Katz, Fellini star Barbara Steele, Julie Newmar, PeeWee Herman, and
even Jeffery Jones, school principal Mr.Rooney from Ferris Beuller's Day
Off. Tim Burton and Lisa Marie are quite an amazing couple.
August 26, 1998 Early breakfast at the Farmer's Market with Ben Stiller's
producer Stuart Cornfeld and performance artist/L.A legend Johanna Went. We
have white omelets and the best donuts in town. Then visit with John
Malkovich on the set of Being John Malkovich, his latest film project. It's
a very weird script, directed by Spike Jone. Dozens of Malkovich
look-a-likes float about as we catch up on house plans and the kids. He
looks great and it's amazing to watch him in action. Malkovich is a
brilliant actor.
August 26, 1998 5:10 flight to Phoenix on a United Shuttle. Check into the Ritz-Carlton, which turns out to be very reasonable. I love the giant bathrooms and the excellent service.
August 27, 1998 11:30 A.M. Photograph Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor at her home for a People Magazine cover. It's 115 degrees in the shade, so most of the shooting ends up indoors. My crew includes assistants Travis Roozee, Moto Matsumoto, actress/makeup artist Tatijana Shoan, and stylist Michael Green. We make the 3:40 P.M. flight with a quick lunch at the Phoenix airport and arrive in New York at 1:00 A.M. The glamorous part of photography. But at least TWA is smooth and on-time, unlike Luxury Limo Service, late for the last time.
