CESARIA EVORA
Cesaria Evora
April 23, 1996    I tell Bill Stockland that Cesaria Evora is dropping by for a portrait and he drops the phone in awe. At 4:00 PM the barefoot diva arrives with an entourage of translators and ladies in waiting. Cesaria's face is shaped by every bar room from New York to Sao Paulo. We shoot quickly and silently and at the end she thanks me with a kiss. Later that night my assistant Scott Whittle and I arrive at the Bottom Line for her show. The place is backed, standing room only. We have a table reserved in front with Phoebe Snow and Ornette Coleman. The crowd is enchanted. Her voice is like a Domaine Drouhin 1994 that has been properly chilled and left to breath. Later we go backstage and drink brandy which Cesaria pours into paper cups for us.
