FRANCOISE GILOT-SALK
FRANCOISE GILOT-SALK
Feb. 14, 1995   10:00 AM shoot.    Portrait of Francoise Gilot-Salk for House Beautiful. Good press for the upcoming Picasso show at MoMA. I try to remember my art history. How does it go for the legendary Francoise Gilot? She lived with Picasso for ten years, mother of Paloma and Claude, a painter herself, later marries Salk -- Mr. Polio (not to be mixed up with Lauren -- Mr. Polo). She arrives and is still a rare beauty, charming, and relaxed. At the end of the session I tell her that I know that she has a great sense of humor and I ask her if she would indulge me in a special portrait. She says yes and out comes the umbrella. I pose behind her, holding it over her head with my assistant in the background. Undoubtedly, Picasso would be mortified.
